Simple Past Tense is used to tell about an event which already occurred in the past.

Sub + past form of the verb + obj

or

Sub + did + verb + obj

Simple Past Tense should be used in sentences which contain time words which represent the past like yesterday, last, ago, in 2009, in January, on Monday etc. Did is used in these sentences to make them negative (sentences with not) or to ask a question.

We can easily identify a Simple Past Sentence by looking 2 things

  1. There won’t be any auxiliary verbs in the sentence and the verb will be a past verb.
  2. If you see ‘did’ as auxiliary verb in any sentence then the sentence will always be a simple past sentence.

Simple Past Sentence is also used to say that an action is regularly performed in the past.

The words which represent habitual action which we already sow in Simple Present Tense like

Every, always, usually, seldom, never, sometimes, often, frequently, generally, habitually, occasionally, once, twice, thrice etc.

if seen in a sentence which represent the past then you should use the Simple Past Form.

Eg:

  • My Father came here yesterday.
  • I saw my friend last week.
  • The boys reached here two hours ago.
  • I passed the SSLC exam in 2002.
  • He usually played cricket when he was a child.
  • He did not attend the function yesterday.
