Simple Present Tense

Simple Present Tense is used to represent habitual action, universal truth, things that never change etc. The form of a Simple Present Tense Sentence is given below.

Sub + Present form of the verb + Obj

Or

Sub + do/does + verb

1. The verb of the sentence will be in present tense and there will not be any auxiliary verbs in the sentence.
2. A sentence with auxiliary verbs as do/does will always be in simple present tense.

Always note that if the sentence is positive and subject is singular, ‘s’ or ‘es’ should be added to the verb to make it singular. And if the sentence is positive and subject is plural ‘s’ or ‘es’ should not be added to the verb so that the verb remains plural. Also if sentence is negative inorder to add ‘not’ any one of the do(plural)/does(singular) should be added depending on the subject.

Eg:

• He goes to school regularly
• He does not go to school regularly
• They go to school
• They do not go to school

Rules for a sentence in simple present Tense

1. Simple Present Tense is used to represent universal truths or to represent things that never change.
   Eg:
   • Sita usually reads a book.
   • Arun visits his hometown once in a bluemoon.
2. Simple Present is used t say about a habitual action

3. Simple Present is used to express a future action that is planned
   Eg:
   • Meet me when you come next.
4. Simple Present is used to represent historic things.
   • Eg: The British parliament declares that India is divided into two parts.
   • India wins her Freedom.
5. Simple Present is used to represent sudden exclamation.
   Eg:
   • Oh! It Rains.
   • Harrah! The man comes.
6. Simple Present is used to represent sense organ verbs.
   Eg: Remember, wish, feel, think, smell, hear, forget, see…..
   • I hear music with my brother.
   • My friend still remembers me.
7. Simple Present is also used to represent Stalin verbs
   Eg:
   • Radha says lies.
   • Babu tells foolishness to me.

Every, always, usually, seldom, never, sometimes, often, frequently, generally, habitually, regularly, occasionally, rarely, once, twice, thrice, daily, weekly, monthly, annually, yearly

If you see these words in a sentence and if the sentence represents a present tense then you should always use simple present tense in that sentence.
